Pravachan is a kind Seminar or Consortium in Hindu religious system where one or more religious dignitaries (guru / swami /vakta / maharaj / baba / acharya / parashar / shashtri ) orates discourses or lectures on some religious or socio-religious topics specially scriptures. Usually in such a pravachan the religious dignitaries (guru / swami / vakta / maharaj / baba / acharya / parashar / shashtri ) interprets and elaborates the philosophy and mysteries of Scriptures consisting mainly of ancient Vedic literatures.
Pravachans sometimes become very emotional. People who listen to Pravachans have become more tolerant of their brethren; a sense of giving and forgiving has been inculcated in them.
In the older days the religious dignitaries(guru /swami /vakta / maharaj / baba / acharya / parashar / shashtri )were often well versed in the Sanskrit language and educated and well trained in Veda Sastras and Vedanta. It is easier to listen to some Pandit or Purohit who is conducting a Pravachan to understand some of the scriptures. Basically the Pandit elaborates on the significance of the sloka or scripture he reads and gives several bhavas and angles to look at a single verse. In modern times separate Sanskrit and Vedas colleges has been established at various religious centres such as Vrindawan and Haridwar etc. also with the passage of time several major and minor bodies of saints and literates have evolved who once in a lifetime award titles in the field of Pravachan to the master classes namely Jagadguru etc.
Pravachan interprets slokas and scriptures and does not involve much singing. A Pravachan can take several days to interpret a single line from a sloka. Paruthiyur Krishna Sastri’s ‘Rasanishyandini' is an example of a detailed Ramayana explanatory work.
In Later years Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda gave excellent life straightening and motivational Pravachans. Afterwards, Keeran, Krubananda Variyar, and Krishnapremi gave captivating lectures.
In the recent years various guru / swami /maharaj / baba / bodies have evolved who draw huge crowds, and have tremendous fan following because of their faith in humanity and the miracles that they have caused to happen in peoples lives.
